Work In Progress
The Bedford to Hitchin line, a stepping stone for the Midland Railway. Opened in 1857, the line served the stations Bedford St. Johns, Cardington, Southill, Shefford, Henlow and Hitchin. Originally used as part of the Midland Mainline into London it became redundant when the GNR evicted the Midland Railway from the sidings at Kings Cross forcing them to build their own railway to London. The track between Bedford and Hitchin was singled apart from Southill to Shefford. Passenger services ceased on the line in 1961 and goods in 1964.
